Annual Report

SIG Name: Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM)

Co-chairs: Jennifer Marin, MD, MSc & Elizabeth Alpern, MD, MSCE

SIG purpose/mission: The mission of the PEM SIG is to advance the field of pediatric emergency medicine through the presentation of relevant and timely issues in PEM.

Current SIG goals:
We have been working hard to put together a fantastic line up of speakers and panelists for the 2018 PEM SIG at PAS in Toronto! We are partnering with the Race in Medicine SIG for this year's topic, A Journey to a Diverse and Equitable Workforce in PEM, which is sure to be exciting and provocative, generating lots of discussion, powerful ideas, and strategies for the future. Objectives: 1. Identify the current state of workforce diversity and equity in PEM. 2. List potential solutions to the diversity and equity issues facing PEM. 3. Identify the top three diversity and equity-related priorities for PEM. This year, we are offering two $600 scholarships; one each for a resident and a pediatric emergency medicine fellow to offset the cost of attending the SIG in Toronto. The application submission deadlines are December 12, 2017 5p EST for residents and March 1st, 2018 5p EST for pediatric emergency medicine fellows. Awardees will be notified by December 20th and March 30th, respectively. For more information and to request an application, please contact Jennifer Marin, MD (jennifer.marin@chp.edu). Stay tuned for the exact date, time, and location of the PEM SIG, which will be announced after the New Year.

Annual summary:
The 2017 PEM SIG in San Francisco was a resounding success with approximately 180 participants gathering to hear and learn more about the current state of pediatric sepsis.

Specifically, the learning objectives were to:
1. Learn strategies to implement and assess quality improvement initiatives to improve the emergency department recognition and management of pediatric sepsis
2. Recognize current initiatives toward establishing consensus definitions for pediatric sepsis
3. Understand the present and future landscape of clinical and translational research in pediatric sepsis
4. Be familiar with current legislative strategies as they impact care in the emergency department

For those who could not attend the 2017 SIG, slides are available by contacting jennifer.marin@chp.edu.
