YIA Program Application Requirements




APA Membership


Prior to submitting a proposal, please ensure that both you and your chosen primary mentor are current members of the APA. Membership applications must be submitted no later than Tuesday, September 4, at 9:00 AM ET, to be considered for the 2019 cycle.


Timeline


This is a one-time award for 1-year. Multi-year funding requests will not be considered. Please review the Young Investigator Awards Program timeline for the 2019 Cycle.


Initial Proposal


Initial Proposal submissions for 2019 must be received by Tuesday, September 4, at 9:00 AM ET.

Application Checklist (Detailed Instructions - Important!)

This checklist will help applicants to ensure all materials are completed in the acceptable format. This checklist should not be submitted with the initial proposal application. Each applicant must include the following in their initial proposal submission:

  • Cover Page
  • Letter of Intent (LOI)
  • References for LOI
  • Budget and Budget Justification
  • Biographical Sketch
  • Letter of Support from Primary Mentor
  • Extended Eligibility Request (if applicable)

All application materials must be combined into a single .pdf for submission in the order they are listed on the Application Checklist. The .pdf should be labeled using the following format: FundingPath_FirstInitialLastName.pdf. For example, Nutrition_JSmith.pdf.

Please Note: Incomplete submissions and application materials that exceed the requested page limits will not be considered for review.

A panel, convened by the APA Research Committee Chair, will review initial submissions and select Principal Investigators (PIs) who will be invited to submit full proposals.


Full Proposal


Those who receive an invitation to submit a full proposal will be notified directly of the submission due date.

  • Cover Page
  • Proposal
  • References
  • Budget and Budget Justification
  • Biographical sketch
  • Letter of Support from Primary Mentor

A second study section, convened by the APA Research Committee Chair, will review and score the full proposals, and prepare a summary review to be sent to each PI. Funding decisions will be based on the results of the study section review. The number of proposals selected for funding will be determined by the funds available for the given year. The awardees will be announced at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting.


Proposal Review Criteria


  • Relevance of the proposed project to the selected funding path
  • Likelihood of project success and contribution to evidence base
  • Support from the home institution as well as commitment of the primary mentor
  • Overall quality of the submission

Young Investigator Awards will be given with the understanding that the project is initiated and completed within 1 year. Make sure to review the Young Investigator Awards Program Timeline.

All awardees are encouraged to submit abstracts from their projects to a PAS Meeting and to submit a manuscript summarizing the project results to the APA Journal, Academic Pediatrics, for possible publication.
