RAPID Program Application Requirements




APA Membership


Prior to submitting a proposal, please ensure that both you and your chosen primary mentor are current members of the APA. Membership applications must be submitted no later than Monday, November 12, 2018, at 9am ET, to be considered for the upcoming cycle.


Timeline


This is a one-time award for 1-year. Multi-year funding requests will not be considered.


Initial Proposal


Initial Proposal submissions for the 2019 cycle are now closed. Submission for the 2020 cycle will begin late summer/early fall 2019.

Application Checklist (Detailed Instructions - Important!)

This checklist will help applicants to ensure all materials are completed in the acceptable format. This checklist should not be submitted with the initial proposal application. Each applicant must include the following in their initial proposal submission:

  • Cover Page
  • Statement attesting that the applicant is a member of an URM group (please specify) or disabled
  • Letter of Intent (LOI)
  • References for LOI
  • Budget and Budget Justification
  • Biographical Sketches of Applicant & Primary Mentor
  • Letter of Support from Primary Mentor
  • Letter of Support from Department Chair

All application materials must be combined into a single .pdf for submission in the order they are listed on the Application Checklist. The .pdf should be labeled using the following format: RAPIDProgram_FirstInitialLastName.pdf. For example, RAPIDProgram_JSmith.pdf.

Please Note: Incomplete submissions and application materials that exceed the requested page limits will not be considered for review.

The RAPID National Advisory Committee (NAC) will review initial submissions and select Principal Investigators (PIs) who will be invited to submit full proposals.


Full Proposal


Those who receive an invitation to submit a full proposal will be notified directly of the submission due date.

The RAPID NAC will review and score the full proposals and prepare a summary review to be sent to each PI. Funding decisions will be based on the results of the study section review. The number of proposals selected for funding will be determined by the funds available for the given year. The awardees will be announced at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting.


Proposal Review Criteria


  • Relevance of the proposed project to the APA, RAPID, and NIDDK mission areas
  • Likelihood of project success
  • Evidence of high potential for future career success in biomedical, behavioral, social, clinical, or health services research
  • Outstanding mentorship
  • Commitment and mentoring track record of the primary mentor
  • Support from the applicant's department chair and home institution
  • Overall quality of the submission

RAPID Scholars will be awarded with the understanding that the project is initiated and completed within 1 year.

All awardees are encouraged to submit abstracts from their projects to a PAS Meeting and to submit a manuscript summarizing the project results to the APA Journal, Academic Pediatrics, for possible publication.
