Updated Enrollment Survey

The APA CORNET Steering and Executive Committees have been working hard to update the network's enrollment survey. We hope this will make it easier for individual continuity clinics to join APA CORNET, while also helping connect the more than 200 pediatric residency programs across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

We would like to encourage all current members to update your enrollment! This will help us to:

  • Recruit for new research studies
  • Communicate with leaders at individual continuity clinics
  • Collaborate with all network members

If you are new to APA CORNET and have not yet enrolled, please consider doing so!

As a reminder, we ask that all sites contacts are current members of the APA.

Project Recruitment

WE CARE (Well Child Care Evaluation, Community Resources, Advocacy, Referral, Education) aims to address Social Determinants of Health in pediatric practices. The study is funded by the NIH, specifically NICHD, and will start enrolling families to participate this Fall. WE CARE is a new model of care to better address families’ social needs compared to the current standard of care. The intervention includes screening and referring to local resources for social needs such as food insecurity, housing, and childcare. The WE CARE study has a stepped wedge design, in which participating practices implement the WE CARE intervention at staggered intervals; practices will be randomly assigned to receive training online or at your practice at a mutually convenient time.

Benefits of participating:

  • Learn how to screen for unmet social needs and develop a Family Resource Book with referrals.
  • Receive guidance in identifying local community resources that address six social needs: food insecurity, housing, utilities, childcare, employment, and education.
  • Help researchers understand families’ social needs and ways to address them.
  • Potential to enhance your relationship with patients’ families.
  • Practices will receive $2,000 in recognition of their time devoted to this study.

Eligible practices:

  • Must provide care to patients that are uninsured or covered by public insurance
  • Must NOT identify as a Community Health Center
  • Must NOT routinely screen and refer for three or more of the following six basic social needs at well-child care visits:
    • Childcare
    • Employment
    • Housing
    • Food insecurity
    • Education
    • Utilities (heating, cooling, water, and/or electricity)

To learn more and to join the WE CARE study’s Cycles 2 and 3, please contact Holly Tyrrell via email at hollyce@academicpeds.org.

Our goal is that by finding and assisting families with unmet needs, we might change the course of patients' and families' health and wellness. We hope to hear from you!

LitNet Reach Out and Read Survey

CORNET is conducting a large, national research project in collaboration with Reach Out and Read's new research network LitNet. This study will look at what residency programs are doing around resident training and Reach Out and Read.

This study will consist of a survey filled out by your residents, continuity faculty, and your site's Reach Out and Read Champion. Participating programs that reach 80% completion of their surveys will receive 100 free books through Reach Out and Read. Programs that achieve 100% completion of surveys will have their site names put in a hat and two will be randomly selected to receive a pizza party for their residents.

This study has been approved by the APA CORNET Executive Committee and expedited by the IRB of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The information gathered by this survey will be used for baseline data and learning purposes. The data may be used to look at sites, but no individual respondents will be identified. Participation in this study is voluntary. Your decision to participate and the study results will have no effect on your Reach Out and Read site, potential funding opportunities, membership in APA CORNET, your employment, or any other factors.

If your site would like to participate, please contact Holly Tyrrell directly at hollyce@academicpeds.org for enrollment. The survey will closed August 31st, 2018.
